Linux distributions
Which distribution is best to use is subject to personal
preference. They each have different goals and different target
audiences.
- Mandriva (Mandrake)
Linux has a reputation for being easy for beginners to use and
containing relatively up-to-date software.
- Debian GNU/Linux is
produced entirely by a community of volunteers, and has a reputation
for stability and an emphasis on shipping only free software.
- Red Hat Linux is aimed
primarily at business users, and is one of the most popular
distributions world-wide. Fedora is Red Hat's
"community" (i.e., freely available and not commercially supported)
distribution.
- Gentoo Linux puts an
emphasis on compiling all of its software from scratch. While its
installation plunges you in at the deep end, Gentoo has excellent
documentation and generally keeps up with bleeding-edge versions of
software better than most other distributions.
- Yellow Dog
Linux is a distribution specifically for PowerPC-based Apple
Macintosh computers.
- Slackware is one of
the oldest Linux distributions still around, with a stated goal of
being the most Unix-like distribution.
